Abstract
Soil classification serves as a reflection of a country's level of soil science and acts as a medium for exchanging soil information. Understanding regional soil characteristics, land use and management holds significant importance. In an effort to advance the development and global exchange of soil classification, the International Soil Classification Organization hosted the South African Soil International Discussion Conferences in 1996 and 2016. The conferences facilitated the exchange of research progress in soil classification from various countries, while also enabling on-site investigations of soil in South Africa, including the Kruger National Park and Johannesburg Gold Vein City. This paper aimed to summarize the characteristics, causes, and recent advancements in soil classification in South Africa, providing valuable insights to promote international exchange of soil classification between China and Africa.
